Emergency Water Heater Shutdown Guide

Please contact Department of Water & Sewer if you need your main water turned off (775) 635-2190.  If after hours, please call the Sheriff Dispatch at (775) 635-5161.

Follow These Steps:

Step

1.  Shut off water

Action

Locate the cold water valve above the tank and turn clockwise.

Why?

Stops the "flood" at the source

2.  Shut down power or gas.

Electric:  Turn off at breaker

Gas:  Turn off gas valve or turn dial on front of water heater to "off"

Prevents fire, dry-firing, or gas leaks.

What to do while you wait?

Grab a shop vac or old towels. Move any boxes or electronics at least 10 feet away from the unit.

Take 3 photos of the leak and damage for insurance purposes.  You can also text us a photo of the leak (775) 389-7651
