Why Local Water Heater's Age Differently

If you’re looking at a national website, they might tell you that a standard water heater lasts 12 to 15 years. But here in the high desert—from Battle Mountain and Northern Nevada—the rules are a bit different.

Our groundwater is rich in calcium and magnesium. While great for the landscape, these minerals settle at the bottom of your tank when heated. This creates a thick layer of sediment that acts like a thermal blanket between the burner and the water.

The result? Your heater has to work twice as hard to get your shower hot, leading to "metal fatigue" and eventually a tank failure. In our region, it is common to see units reach their "retirement age" as early as 6 to 8 years.

The "Kettle" Sound: If your heater sounds like it's popping or rumbling, that’s steam bubbles struggling to escape through the sediment layer.

The Rusty Tap: If your hot water looks tea-colored but your cold water is clear, your tank’s internal lining is likely failing.

The Slow Recovery: If you’re running out of hot water halfway through your shower, then your tank is likely half-full of "rock" instead of water.
