Importance of Preventive Maintenance
Regular plumbing maintenance is the best defense against the unique "liquid rock" and extreme temperatures we face here in Battle Mountain. By catching small issues like mineral scaling in your water heater or a slow-dripping valve before they turn into emergencies, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your appliances and prevent costly water damage. Beyond the peace of mind that comes with a reliable home, yearly inspections help keep your utility bills low by ensuring your system operates at peak efficiency. It’s much easier—and far more affordable—to flush a tank or replace a worn seal today than it is to deal with a flooded basement or a burst pipe in the middle of a freezing Nevada night.
Protect Your Water Heater
Since Battle Mountain has such high mineral content, a "standard" water heater inspection needs to be a bit more aggressive. You should inspect and flush your water heater each year.

Science Behind the Scale
(boring but important)
The Science of "Liquid Rock": Grains Per Gallon Explained

In Battle Mountain, we don’t measure water hardness like the rest of the country. While most places consider 7 to 10 grains "hard," our local tests frequently hit 25 to 35+ grains per gallon (GPG).

What is a "Grain"? Imagine a standard aspirin tablet. In the world of plumbing, one "grain" of hardness is roughly equal to the weight of that aspirin tablet in dissolved calcium and magnesium.

The Math for Your Home: If your water tests at 30 grains, every 1,000 gallons of water passing through your pipes carries 30,000 grains of rock. Over the course of a single year, the average Battle Mountain household sends nearly 150 pounds of dissolved rock through their water heater, dishwasher, and faucets.

Why "Liquid Rock" is Dangerous: When this water is heated (inside your water heater), the minerals "fall out" of the liquid and solidify. This creates a rock-hard crust known as scale.

Insulation: This scale acts as a blanket between the burner and the water, making your heater run longer and hotter to get the same results.

The "Popping" Sound: That sound you hear is steam bubbles trapped under layers of rock, trying to escape—a clear sign your heater is struggling.
